Just across the border in Andhra Pradesh, the Veerabhadra temple at Lepakshi has some of the finest Vijayanagara-era ceiling murals, a famous "hanging pillar" that barely touches the floor, and a huge monolithic Nandi. It is an easy half-day drive up the airport highway.
