The ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, set among boulder-strewn hills along the Tungabhadra. The Virupaksha temple, the Vittala temple with its stone chariot and the Royal Enclosure are highlights. Take an overnight train to Hosapete or allow at least two days.
